About Terry Keevil

Over FORTY years experience

I began playing the oboe at age 11 and quickly fell in love with it’s unique sound.  In sixth grade, I played Amahl and the Night Visitors, and in high school, performed with the Boston Youth Orchestra, touring Europe and the Middle East.

I hold a Doctor of Musical Arts degree In oboe performance from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.  At SUNYSB, I studied with Stephen Taylor.  I also completed a Master of Music Degree in Oboe Performance at SUNY Stony Brook, where I studied with Ronald Roseman.  I received my BA from Sarah Lawrence College where I also studied with Ronald Roseman.  During my freshman and sophomore years, I attended Amherst College where I studied a variety of subjects in addition to music.

I have extensive professional experience with a wide range of groups, including the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra and Choir of Sacred Music, the Bach Aria Group, and Lazar Gosman’s Tschaikovsky Orchestra.  I was a founding member of the Phoenix Trio (oboe, violin, cello) and the Constelation Trio (flute, oboe, guitar).  For over forty years, I was a member of the chamber group, North Shore Pro Musica.  I’m also a certified Music For People improvisation workshop leader, and have recorded and performed with the grammy award winning cellist, David Darling.  I enjoy practicing Tai Chi and other forms of meditation.

In 2023, my wife and I moved from Long Island to West Stockbridge, MA in the Berkshires, where I’m performing with several groups and continuing to teach.

“I enjoy performing on the oboe and teaching oboe lessons.  I started playing at age eleven and immediately liked everything about the oboe, especially the sound.

Teaching Oboe

I enjoy teaching the oboe and inspiring students to learn to play this beautiful instrument.  For over forty years, I’ve been teaching elementary, junior high and senior high students, as well as adults.  A number of my students have been accepted by elite music schools, including Julliard, Eastman, New England Conservatory, and the Cleveland Institute of Music.

My teaching approach includes providing a thorough grounding in oboe technique, as well as inspired musical expression.  In addition to classical training, I encourage students to improvise and create their own music.  I draw on Tai Chi, Body Mapping, Alexander Technique and Embodied Musicianship to enhance student development and musicianship.
